Multi-Touch Attribution vs Marketing Mix Modeling
Multi-touch attribution and marketing mix modeling both estimate marketing contribution, but they operate at different levels. MTA generally uses customer or event-level journeys; MMM uses aggregated time-series data.
| MTA | MMM | |
|---|---|---|
| Granularity | Touchpoint/customer level | Channel or campaign aggregates |
| Identifiers | Usually important | Not required at user level |
| Offline media | Harder unless linked to journeys | Can model offline and external factors |
| Speed | Can be near real time | Typically periodic model refreshes |
When MTA is useful
Use it when teams need journey visibility, ad-level reporting or CRM-linked attribution and have sufficient event/identity data.
When MMM is useful
Use it when budget allocation spans channels where user-level tracking is incomplete, including offline media, or when privacy/scale makes aggregate modeling more appropriate.
Use both when the questions differ
A mature measurement system can use MTA for operational journey analysis, MMM for portfolio-level allocation and experiments to test causality.
